What is future value?
Future value (FV) is the estimated value of money at a future date, assuming a particular interest rate or rate of return.
Future value calculations can help with savings goals, investment planning and comparing financial scenarios.
Future value formula
For a single initial investment without additional payments, the formula is:
FV = PV × (1 + r/n)^(n × t)
PV is the present value, r is the annual interest rate expressed as a decimal, n is the number of compounding periods per year and t is the number of years.
How do regular payments affect future value?
Making additional payments increases the amount invested. Earlier payments also have more time to earn interest.
This calculator lets you choose whether payments occur at the beginning or end of each payment period.
What is the effective annual rate?
The effective annual rate shows the annual growth rate after accounting for the selected compounding frequency.
More frequent compounding generally increases the effective annual rate when the nominal annual interest rate is positive.
How this calculator handles payments
When payment frequency differs from compounding frequency, the calculator converts the interest rate into an equivalent growth rate for each payment period.
Payments are assumed to occur at regular intervals. Only complete payment periods are counted.
Important considerations
Results assume a constant annual interest rate. They do not include taxes, fees, inflation or changes in market conditions.
Future investment returns are not guaranteed. Actual results may differ from these estimates.
